South Luangwa National Park

The Heart of Zambia's Wild: South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park in Zambia is celebrated as one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife sanctuaries, and for good reason. The concentration of wildlife around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is one of the densest in Africa, offering a safari experience unlike any other. With Edge Travel, you can explore this pristine wilderness and witness nature at its most magnificent.

A Sanctuary of Rich Biodiversity
At the heart of South Luangwa National Park lies the Luangwa River, Africa’s most unaltered major river system. This vital waterway nourishes a sprawling 9,050 square kilometers of diverse habitats, supporting a vast array of wildlife, birds, and vegetation. The park is famed for its pioneering walking safaris, which remain one of the best ways to immerse yourself in the wild, offering a unique perspective on the flora and fauna of this stunning landscape.

Seasonal Transformations
The changing seasons bring a dynamic transformation to South Luangwa’s landscape. From the dry, stark beauty of winter bushveld to the vibrant, green expanses of the summer months, each season offers a different yet equally enchanting experience. The park is home to over 60 animal species and more than 400 bird species, providing endless opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching.

Wildlife Encounters
Mammals and Big Game
South Luangwa is renowned for its large herds of elephants, often numbering up to 70, and abundant buffalo populations that roam throughout the valley. The park is also a haven for hippos, with an estimated 50 per kilometer of the Luangwa River, and it's impossible to miss these massive creatures lounging in the water.
The park’s zebras, distinctive with their evenly spaced stripes, are often seen in small herds, while the Thornicroft’s giraffe, unique to this valley, stands tall among the acacia trees. South Luangwa also boasts 14 antelope species, including the majestic kudu with its spiral horns, the elusive bushbuck, and the numerous impala, often seen in large herds. The shy puku, with its rich orange coat, is also a common sight.

Predators and Carnivores
The valley is a prime habitat for predators. Lions are prevalent, sometimes spotted in prides of up to thirty. South Luangwa is also a stronghold for leopards, though they are more elusive and often require night drives to be seen. Hyenas are a common presence, their eerie calls echoing through the night. Less frequently spotted carnivores include the caracal, wild dog, serval, and side-striped jackal.

Birdlife
With over 400 species, birdwatching in South Luangwa is a delight. From the majestic crowned cranes to colorful bee-eaters and the stately fish eagles, the park's avian diversity is a significant attraction for bird enthusiasts.

Safari Activities
Guided Game Drives
Whether you’re staying at one of the valley’s luxurious lodges or exploring in your own vehicle, the guides at South Luangwa will ensure you experience the full spectrum of the park's wildlife. Guided game drives offer a chance to see everything from hippos and crocodiles along the river to elephants and antelopes on the plains.

Walking Safaris
South Luangwa is the birthplace of the walking safari, a thrilling way to explore the bush on foot. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, these safaris allow you to get up close to the wildlife and learn about the intricate ecosystems of the park.

Night Safaris
Night drives provide a unique opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife. Look for genets, civets, bushbabies, and the elusive leopards that are more active after dark. The experience of seeing the park's predators and other creatures under the cover of night is unforgettable.
